Music

Music is the art of creating and enjoying sounds.
It helps us express our feelings, ideas, and stories through singing, playing instruments, and making rhythms.
By listening to music, we can learn about different cultures, styles, and emotions.
Through composing and creating our own music, we can share our ideas with others.
By performing music, we can build confidence and bring people together through sound.

Music Enrichment and Enhancement at John Blow Primary School

At John Blow Primary School, we believe that music should be brought to life through memorable, practical and creative experiences. Our music curriculum is carefully enhanced through live performances, workshops, visitors, instrumental teaching and whole-school singing opportunities, helping children develop a deep and lasting appreciation of music.

We aim for children not only to develop musical knowledge and skills, but also to experience music in meaningful and enjoyable ways. Through enrichment opportunities, pupils are encouraged to sing, play instruments, compose, listen critically and perform confidently, both individually and as part of an ensemble.

As a school rooted within the local community of Collingham and the surrounding Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire area, we place great importance on providing high-quality musical experiences and strong partnerships that broaden children’s understanding of music beyond the classroom. We are proud to be a Singing Hub and Music Hub School, and this sits at the heart of our enrichment offer, ensuring that singing and musical participation are central to school life.

We work closely with the Inspire Music Service, which supports the development of instrumental learning, whole-class music teaching and performance opportunities across the school. These partnerships ensure that pupils experience high-quality music education and gain access to specialist teaching and wider musical opportunities.

Across the school, enrichment opportunities include:

  • whole-school singing assemblies and performances, supporting our identity as a Singing Hub School
  • instrumental tuition and workshops delivered through Inspire Music Service
  • visiting musicians and live performance experiences
  • Lower Key Stage 2 participation in a performance project with The Hallé Orchestra, including workshops led by Mark De Lisser, providing pupils with high-level professional musical experiences
  • our school choir performing at the Royal Concert Hall as part of the Inspired Christmas Concert, alongside other schools and ensembles
  • participation in local and regional music events and festivals
  • themed music days linked to genres, cultures and historical periods
  • opportunities to compose and perform original music
  • end-of-unit performances for peers and families
  • use of digital music technology to create and record compositions

In addition to these enrichment experiences, we provide a structured programme of whole-school performance opportunities throughout the academic year, ensuring every child has regular opportunities to perform and celebrate their musical learning:

  • EYFS and Key Stage 1 deliver a Christmas performance
  • Lower Key Stage 2 perform in the Spring Term (Easter performance)
  • Upper Key Stage 2 perform in the Summer Term production

Educational experiences are carefully planned to support and enhance classroom learning. Where possible, enrichment is linked directly to current units of work so that musical knowledge and skills are strengthened through practical application. These opportunities help children to develop key musical skills such as performance, composition, listening, evaluation and musical vocabulary.

We are committed to ensuring that enrichment is accessible for all children. Where possible, funding, partnerships and school support are used to ensure that all pupils can take part in musical experiences, regardless of background or prior experience.

In addition to planned musical opportunities, pupils benefit from wider cultural experiences that support their understanding of music and the arts, including:

  • school performances and productions
  • celebrations of different musical genres and cultures
  • Christmas and seasonal musical performances
  • participation in national events such as Music Week
  • links to wider arts experiences, including drama and dance collaborations

Through these experiences, we aim to develop children who are confident, creative and expressive, with a lifelong enjoyment of music and an understanding of how it connects people, cultures and emotions.

The teaching staff of John Blow School collaboratively developed this, supported by curriculum guidance and best practice research. This curriculum is underpinned by research-informed approaches and has been carefully mapped against the National Curriculum to ensure full coverage.
