19.03.26 - Witham St Hughes Vs John Blow
Match Report: Witham St Hughes 5–1 John Blow
John Blow put in a spirited and determined performance against a strong Witham St Hughes side, despite fielding a very young team. With three-quarters of the squad made up of Year 4 pupils playing against Year 6 opposition, and the remaining players from Year 5, this was always going to be a tough test—but one the team rose to impressively.
The first half was defined by a solid defensive display. Goalkeeper Barney was in excellent form, making a series of confident catches and important saves to keep Witham at bay. In front of him, Freddie and Ronnie were outstanding, continuing to build a strong defensive partnership with some well-timed tackles and good positioning.
In midfield, Noah J, Jack, Michael and Harry worked tirelessly, covering ground and battling hard to disrupt Witham’s play. Their efforts paid off when Jack found the net to give John Blow a deserved 1–0 lead going into half-time. Noah L also played a key role, working hard up front on his own before dropping into midfield and putting in a tremendous shift for the team.
The second half saw Witham respond quickly, scoring an early equaliser before taking the lead to make it 2–1. John Blow continued to push forward and created a couple of excellent chances to level the score, but the Witham goalkeeper produced some fine saves to deny them.
With around five minutes remaining, Witham extended their lead to 3–1 following a well-worked kick-in. Despite continuing to battle, John Blow conceded two late goals in the final 30 seconds, which made the scoreline appear more one-sided than the game truly was.
Overall, this was a fantastic battling performance from a young John Blow side. Competing so well against older opposition shows great promise, and the experience gained will no doubt be invaluable as they prepare for next year’s league.
