Mathematics Curriculum Overview and Enhancement – John Blow Primary School

The mathematics curriculum at John Blow Primary School is built around the White Rose Maths scheme, ensuring a carefully sequenced progression of knowledge and skills from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to Year 6. Learning is designed to develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, enabling pupils to become confident, resilient mathematicians who can apply their understanding in a range of contexts.

Across the school, pupils revisit and build upon the key mathematical domains of:

  • Number and Place Value
  • Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division
  • Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
  • Measurement
  • Geometry (Shape, Position and Direction)
  • Statistics
  • Ratio and Algebra (Upper Key Stage 2)

The curriculum is sequenced so that new concepts build on prior learning, with regular opportunities for consolidation before pupils move on to increasingly abstract mathematical thinking. In EYFS, learning focuses on developing strong number sense, pattern recognition and mathematical language through practical exploration and play before progressing to more formal calculation and reasoning throughout Key Stages 1 and 2.
