PE
PE is a way of learning how to move, be active, and develop confidence through physical challenges and teamwork.
It helps us improve our bodies and minds by practising skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, balancing, competing, and performing in a range of sports and activities.
By taking part in PE, we can learn about teamwork, leadership, fairness, resilience, and how to challenge ourselves to improve.
Through exploring different activities and sports, we can discover new skills, solve problems, make decisions, and understand the importance of keeping ourselves healthy.
By celebrating achievements and supporting others, we can build confidence, enjoy being active, and develop a lifelong love of sport and exercise.
PE Curriculum Enhancement Overview – John Blow Primary School
John Blow Primary School provides a broad and inclusive programme of curriculum enhancement that extends learning beyond weekly PE lessons. The school is committed to ensuring that all pupils experience a wide range of physical activities, competitive opportunities and leadership experiences, whilst promoting lifelong participation in physical activity and healthy lifestyles.
Enrichment Experiences
Each term, pupils participate in whole-school enrichment events that broaden their sporting experiences beyond the National Curriculum. These include specialist dance workshops, inclusive sports festivals, Glow in the Dark Dodgeball, the Mini Marathon, a 'Try Something New' Day featuring activities such as lacrosse, fencing and ultimate frisbee, and the annual Sports Day. These events expose pupils to sports they may not otherwise encounter, promote enjoyment of physical activity and encourage participation from all learners.
Extra-Curricular Clubs
A varied programme of before and after-school clubs provides opportunities for pupils to further develop their skills and interests. Provision includes:
- KS1 Multiskills
- KS1 Football
- KS2 Football
- KS1 & KS2 Running Club
- KS2 Cricket
- KS2 Netball
The club offer enables pupils across all key stages to access regular physical activity whilst providing progression routes into competitive school sport.
Swimming Provision
Swimming is delivered on Monday afternoons, with Year 6 pupils attending in small groups of eight throughout the academic year. This model allows focused teaching towards the National Curriculum swimming requirements, including swimming 25 metres confidently, using a range of strokes and performing safe self-rescue. Catch-up swimming is provided during the summer term to maximise the number of pupils achieving the expected standard before leaving primary school.
Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA)
All pupils in Key Stage 2 experience Outdoor and Adventurous Activities annually. Year 3 and Year 4 pupils participate at Hartsholme Park, whilst Year 5 and Year 6 pupils undertake more advanced OAA experiences at Perlethorpe. These activities develop teamwork, resilience, communication, leadership and problem-solving within real-life outdoor environments.
Intra-School Competition
A structured programme of house competitions ensures every pupil has opportunities to experience competitive sport. Competitions include:
- Autumn: Tag Rugby (KS2)
- Spring: Gymnastics (EYFS, KS1 and KS2)
- Summer: Dodgeball (KS2)
These events promote healthy competition, teamwork, sportsmanship and a sense of belonging through the school's house system.
Inter-School Competition
John Blow Primary School offers an extensive programme of competitive sport through local partnerships and school games events. Pupils have opportunities to represent the school in:
- Lincoln South Football League (Years 4–6)
- Newark & District Netball Tournaments (Years 4–6)
- Newark & District Athletics Competitions (Years 3–6)
